Automatic picks the smallest encoding that carries your text, and is right almost always. The other three exist for older scanners that expect one specific encoding; each refuses text it cannot carry rather than mangling it. Encodings we cannot convert to correctly are not offered at all.The margin never goes below 4 — ISO/IEC 18004's minimum; smaller is not a QR code. A logo raises error correction to at least Q. Encoding is chosen by the encoder per symbol and shown in the readout — a manual charset menu only makes codes bigger.

A meaningful share of Indian consumers are on entry-level Android handsets with slow data. SMS needs no app, no data connection and no page load — the message composer opens instantly. For queue joins, callbacks and keyword campaigns, it converts where a landing page will not.

Use a keyword you can route on

Pre-fill a short keyword — BOOK, MENU, HELP — and your SMS gateway can route or auto-reply on it. Keep it uppercase and one word; long pre-filled text bloats the code and invites editing.

Do SMS QR codes need a country code?

Always include the international prefix. A number written without one fails silently for anyone roaming or abroad, and the failure looks like a broken code rather than a formatting mistake.

Does the person pay for the SMS?

Yes — standard carrier rates apply, exactly as for any text they send. Say so on the printed asset if it matters.

Does it work on iPhone?

Yes. The SMSTO: format opens Messages with the number and text ready to send.

Can I use a shortcode?

Yes, if your gateway provides one. Shortcodes also keep the payload smaller, so the printed code stays smaller.

Can I track responses?

Through your SMS gateway, not through us — a static SMS code has no scan analytics.
